Author: Lesslie Newbigin brings to this work his experience as a pastor, missionary, theologian, ecumenical statesman, and writer. He is a visionary thinker who applies wisdom to experience. His writing is Christ-centered, Trinitarian framework, biblical, and missionally-informed.

The book is a series of lectures. Chapters 1-5 discuss the roots of the crisis in Christian confidence using ideas from Polanyi. Otherwise, the organization is unclear.

Newbigin calls for a renewed confidence in the gospel of Jesus Christ in the context of pluralism. He sets forth ways to engage the culture while remaining clearly Christian.
